ネイティブにUntil recently I ( ) an early riser for the last six years.には、was / had been のどれが入るか聞いてみたところ、以下のような意見があったからです。ご参考までに。
I think you will have to rephrase your sentence - you can't logically use "until recently" and "for the last six years" as you have here.
Maybe:
For six years, until just recently, I had been an early riser (but then something brought about a change)
or:
For six years, until just recently, I was an early riser (just really how I used to go on, but haven't since that time just recently – possibly for no clear reason)
In practice, of course, the distinction may be vague even to the native English speaker.
