正直いってかなりひどい訳ですね。おそらく実際の入試だと、ほとんど点数は取れないでしょう。

いくつかヒントを書いておきますので、もう一度考えてみては？　あるいは、他のだれかが投稿してもかまいません。

Herbert Spencer, / (1)when (he was) told that his thought would reach greater heights / (2)were he to become a vegetarian, / changed his habits and began to limit himself to vegetable foods.　His work immediately began to deteriorate, / and (3)it was not long / before he was back on beef, mutton, and pork, / on which he wrote his great book.

(1)主節と同じ主語+ be 動詞が省略されることがあります。例えば、
Cold chicken is delicious (　 ) salad.　　[センター]
☆(1) when eaten with
(2) when eating with
(3) with when eaten
(4) with when eating
●和訳 コールドチキンはサラダといっしょに食べるとおいしい。
と同じことです。

(2)このようなところに疑問文の形が来るのはおかしいことを考えれば、これは仮定法の条件節での if の省略によるものだとわかります。元の形は、
if he were to become a vegetarian

(3)これは決まった言い方なので、辞書で調べるとすぐにわかるでしょう。
