すみません。結局、ご質問に対する答えがあいまいなままでしたが、もう一度、まとめますと、この文の場合は、the を入れなくても可。しかし、フォーマルな文では、まだまだ定冠詞を入れたほうがいい。ということです。蛇足だったかもしれませんが、一応。
