The Dance of the Bees

A honeybee can tell other bees where a food source is located by performing a dance on a wall of the hive. The dancing behavior may assume one of three possible patterns: round, sickle-shaped, or tailwagging. The detErmining factor in the choice of dance pattern is the distance of the food source from the hive. The round dance Indicates locations near the hive, within twenty feet or so. The sickle dance indicates locations at an intermediate distance from the hive, approximately twenty to sixty feet. The tail-wagging dance is for distances that exceed sixty feet.
