Whoever has to deal with young children learns that too much sympathy is a mistake. Children readily understand tht an adult who is sometimes a littler stern is best for them; their instinct tells them whether they are loved or not, and from those whom they feel to be affectionate they will put up with whatever strictness results from genuine desire for their proper development. 幼い子どもたちを扱わねばならない（立場にある）人はだれでも、過ぎたる同情は誤りであることを悟る。子どもたちは、時には少し厳しいくらいの大人が自分たちにとって一番良いということをすぐに理解する。彼らは、自分たちが愛されているかいないかを、本能的に知り、愛してくれていると感じる大人たちから受けるのであれば、彼らの正しい発育を心から願う結果として生まれるどんな厳しさにも耐えるものである。
