The Mind and Health
It is a well-known fact that the mind plays an important role in health. A person with a cheerful, optimistic outlook is less likely to fall ill than someone discouraged. Conversely, a person convinced that he is going to die will probably do so. We find that when one member of a long-married couple dies, the surviving spouse often dies soon afterward. Some of us need only to read the symptoms of a disease to be convinced that we are suffering from it. Many doctors take the precaution of reading their newspaper's medical column, knowing that patients may arrive expecting to be told that what ails them is the disease discussed there.
