(4) both を選ぶ人が多いのですが、both なら on both sideS と複数形になります。on either side of the road が正解で、これで、on both sides of the road という意味になります。either A or B で、「AかBのどちらか一方」と理解しているとおかしいということになりますが、これはそのまま覚えておくしかないと思います。
以下、ロイヤル英文法からですが、 ================= either が side, end （端）のような単数名詞を修飾して「どちらの〜も」「両方の」の意味になることがある。
There are stores on either side of the street. =There are stores on both sides of the street. =There are stores on each side of the street. =================
このようなことになるのは、either には、the one or the other of the two 「２者のうちどちらか一方」というふつうの意味のほかに、the one and the other of the two 「両方」という意味もあるからです。ただ、あとのほうの意味は古い形式ばった（formal）言い方なので、あまり使いません。side や end などと用いられるだけ、と理解しておけばいいでしょう。 「道の両側に」といいたい時には、on both sides of the street と言えばいいでしょう。「道の片側」だと、on one side of the street となります。ただ、入試では、on either side of the street は受験生が間違いやすいので、かなり出題されます。
