Invitations to dinner are issued by written notes, printed cards or by telephone. If the invitation is by telephone, it is often wise to send a reminder by post. Printed invitations usually imply a relatively formal occasion but if 'black tie' is required it will be stated on the card. If an invitation is made by telephone (1)it is helpful to indicate how formal the party will be so that the guests may dress suitably.
All invitations to dinner should be answered immediately and no dinner engagement should ever be broken without serious reason. Although good friends can be invited at short notice, people should be invited to a sizeable party between 10 days and three weeks before the event. (2)The earlier the notices are sent out, the more likely it is that all the guests will be able to accept, and every hostess knows how a well-planned party can go wrong if gaps have to be filled at the last minute.
