It was in ancient Egypt 4000 years ago that the cat first decided to give up its independence and enter the homes of humans. They were loved and worshiped because they protected the grain storehouses from mice. They were even protected by Egyptian law. To harm a cat was a serious crime, and killing a cat was punishable by death. When a cat died, the whole family went into mourning. They shaved off their eyebrows as a sign of their bereavement. The dead cat was then mummified and buried in a cats' graveyard, in solemn burial ritual.
