A conflict between the generations --- between youth and age --- seems the most stupid of all conflicts, for (1)it is one between oneself as one is and oneself as one will be, or between oneself as one was and oneself as one is. Everyone in the course of life is young, and everyone who survives long enough becomes old. And it is the same person who is both --- the same soul, the same mind and the same heart. (2)So if any kind of conflict can properly be described as suicidal, it is this. Persisted in it would make the continuance of human society impossible.
(3)The old must place their wisdom and experience at the service of the young, yet allow the vitality, energy and enthusiasm of youth freedom of scope, while the young must respect and honor the achievements and practical sense of their elders and place their physical strength and vigor, while they still possess them, at the service of the continuing community. Both, for their mutual benefit, must be tolerant of one another and of the frailties that are common to all. [京大]
