→a good deal は read と discuss にもかけておいたほうがいいでしょう。「大いに読み、議論し、文章を書いてみなさい」ということです。

■先に書いたように、これは have to ではなく、have / to です。また、「いやでも身につく」という意味ではありません。

初めて出てきた名詞、 opportunity についている the は「予告の the 」といって、後で説明しますからとりあえず the と特定しておきますよ、ということです。「〜する機会」は、opportunity to V というので、この文では、opportunity to pass from ... の to pass from ... が opportunity を修飾しています。to pass の to は不定詞のマーカー（しるし）なので、have to とは続かないことがわかると思います。この you have も opportunity にかかっている関係詞節です。
