The idea that one cannot understand the contemporary politics of a nation without a good understanding of its history is hardly controversial, even though much contemporary political science appears to take a nation's history for granted, as if it were always a "given," inescapable background to understanding a society and its culture. ..... However, it is surely best to treat Japanese history as quite distinct from that of Europe, or indeed from that of China, and to conduct analysis in terms which pay rigorous attention to the uniqueness of the Japanese case.
