We have become rightly skeptical about relistic reconstructions of concentration camp scenes as depicted in the American television mini-series Holocaust -- one of the most popular and commercially successful Hollywood products, which was sold to fifty countries including West Germany, where its reception nearly caused a scandal in 1978. ..... We also have become disturbed by the shameless trivialization of human suffering as shown in such television specials as War and Remembrance, in which the Holocaust usually serves as a mere background to melodramatic private affairs.
