   　 ¶1 One essential aspect of realistic dog ownership is understanding that a dog is not a small hairy person. It is an animal with its own needs and drives specific to its species, not a creature to be molded into something we want it to be or an entity to be worshiped. Why is it we often don't accept and appreciate dogs for what they are?
¶2 People sometimes use pets to meet emotional needs that should be met by other people. The depth of human love can come only from other humans. While our dogs give us fulfilling companionship and reprieve from loneliness, nothing substitutes for people. Often unaware, we try to satisfy our deep psychological need for other people through our dogs. When a dog is treated like a person, it's not fair to the dog. Many neurotic canine behaviors, such as separation anxiety, inappropriate barking, poor aggression, can be traced to an owner's overattachment to a dog.
