I had been so embarrassed by the rudeness of Londoners toward my husband's American English that it was almost a relief to move to the U.S. and meet the same kind of prejudice towards my British English. ..... There are other more subtle differences: how quickly people speak, the way they tell jokes, how polite they are, what the usual way of saying something is, what the acceptable topics of conversation are. It takes a long time to learn all these things.
