(1)Although hardly limited to the twentieth century, the questioning of past values can certainly be said to be one of the most definite characteristics of the past one hundred years. Authority and tradition have been challenged in every field of human activity -- from politics, philosophy, and religion to psychology, lliterature, art, and music. (2)Young people were at the center of this challenge to established society, inspired by a strong sense of idealism and the perception that the older generation had become the victims of their own economic success.
