Men have always lived in 'modern' times but they have not always been as much impressed with the fact. ..... It is quite important for us to deal with the building up of the modern way of life in the late fifteenth, the sixteenth, and the seventeenth centuries mainly in terms of art and letters, religion, science and technology separately, though always remembering that in the real life of our society they were inseparably combined.
