A Successful Tribe
The Pequot and other native peoples have lived in southwestern Connecticut in the United States for thousands of years. After European settlers arrived about 400 years ago, they began to take away the land belonging to the Native Americans. By the early 1970s, only a small percentage of the Pequot tribe remained on the tiny territory that still belonged to it.
